RYA Competent Crew Sailing Course Itinerary

Day 1 

Safety brief  on deck and down below. Personal safety, fitting  your own life jacket and when to use it.

Preparation for sea. The correct way of slipping from the berth. How to handle lines and fenders

Go out of the marina. Have a go at helming the boat under power. Now you have your sea legs we go and anchor for lunch.

Learn how sails work and how to hoist the main We head out into Gibraltar bay under sail.

Day 2

Parts of the boat and sea terminology, knot practice, and where we find weather information.

A talk on passage planning from your skipper and where you might be heading for at the end of the day. (Depending on weather )

Out to sea to develop your crewing skills. Your first passage across the Straits.

Day 3

How to do an engine check. Parts of the rigging. Plan the next passage. Out to sea for more sailing practice. Into a new port.

Day 4

Practice your knots and their uses, pump up the dingy have a row round the harbour. Instructor will go through mooring the boat up in the correct manner. 

Out to sea lots again for more boat handling and off to a new destination with at least three hours night sailing.

Day 5

Head back towards Gibraltar. Get involved in navigation. Helming practice then back into Marina Bay.
