RYA Day Skipper Sailing Course Itinerary
Day 1
Safety brief for all on deck and down below. Personal safety, fitting your own life jacket and when to use it.
The correct way of slipping from the berth and a practice of berthing up.
Leave the marina. Have a go at helming the boat under power in different directions. Now you have got your sea legs we go and anchor for lunch.
Learn about sail trim and how sails work. We head out into Gibraltar bay under sail.
Day 2
Weather, sea terminology and knot practice..
A talk on passage planning from your instructor and where you might be heading for today.
Out to sea to develop your helming skills, man overboard practice.
Your first passage practicing your day skipper navigation on the way.
Day 3
Go through a good engine check with your crew, and get them more involved in the next passage plan. Out to sea, more man overboard practice, and more sailing. Practice reefing (reducing sails). More navigation under way.
Day 4
Practice your knots and their uses. Your instructor will go through mooring the boat up in the correct manner.
Passage planning for the day, then out to sea for lots more boat handling and off to a new destination with at least three hours night sailing.
Day 5
Head back towards Gibraltar. Navigation down at the chart table and using the GPS. Basic meteorology plus rules of the road.
